Joe Biden LIVE: Cover-up mystery as POTUS crisis call with Afghan leader faces ‘blackout’ | World | News
The explosive leaked transcript, published by Reuters, details a call made July 23 between the two presidents in which Mr Biden appears to pressure Mr Ghani to create the illusion they could hold off the Taliban “whether it is true or not”. The transcript alleged President Biden said: “I need not tell you the perception around the world and in parts of Afghanistan, I believe, is that things are not going well in terms of the fight against the Taliban, and there is a need, whether it is true or not, there is a need to project a different picture.”
Critics have accused him of misleading the international community in an attempt to portray the 20-year intervention in Afghanistan as a success for the US military.
President Ghani warned his American counterpart: “Mr President, we are facing a full-scale invasion, composed of Taliban, full Pakistani planning and logistical support, and at least 10-15,000 international terrorists, predominantly Pakistanis thrown into this, so that dimension needs to be taken account of.”
However, several major US news networks including CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS and NBC, have refused to mention the controversial phone call creating a near-total media blackout.
Both CBS and MSNBC avoided the subject of Afghanistan altogether on primetime news on Wednesday despite the swilling controversy and growing terror threat in the region.
Earlier this week, White House press secretary Jen Psaki dodged questions about the bombshell phone call, saying “I’m not going to get into private, diplomatic conversations or leaked transcripts of phone calls.”
