Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William have been positioning themselves as future rulers this week, just days before the Queen gets back to royal duty.

Queen Elizabeth II, 95, is due to get back to royal duty this weekend and attend the opening ceremony of the Scottish Parliament, accompanied by Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

The important engagement will precede her return to Windsor Castle following her summer break at her Balmoral in Aberdeenshire.

In the Queen’s absence, members of the Royal Family including her grandson Prince William and his wife Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, both 39, have been holding the fort by carrying out a number of public appearances.

The Cambridges latest outings have been met with huge enthusiasm from fans and will have no doubt thrilled the Queen.

Yesterday the Cambridges embarked on a royal visit to Northern Ireland, visiting Derry-Londonderry, a visit which royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams described as “absolutely marvellous”.

Upon her return, the Queen will come back and take back the reins of the Firm from the hands of the Cambridges, Prince Charles and Camilla.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been based in the USA since their departure from royal life and while the couple are yet to return to the UK as a family unit there is mounting speculation they will visit the Queen this Christmas.

In a comment piece for News.com.au royal journalist, Daniela Elser wrote: “There is a lot about the idea of Harry and Meghan (with their baby daughter Lilibet who will by then, be about six-months-old and two-and-a-half-year-old son Archie in tow) making the trip back across the pond in mid-to-late December which would make sense.

“It would give them the chance to introduce their new bub to his family and the large family gathering, which usually sees the Queen’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren gather en very-well-bred-masse, would be a less pressured way for the Sussexes’ to re-enter the royal orbit.”
